Cleaning A Roof Before Winter

If you’re making a list to prep your home for winter you may want to add a roof cleaning to that list. If you have algae, lichen or moss on your roof, it can still grow in the cold winter months, even while you have snow on your roof! This is why it is so important to have your roof cleaned now, before the winter months. If you wait until spring you’ll find that the algae, lichen and moss have already spread aggressively across your roof.

One of the other reasons to have your roof cleaned is that our 100% biodegradable treatment is unaffected by the snow, rain or wind. If you’ve read some of our previous blogs then you know that rain and wind are often ways that algae, lichen and moss spread from roof to roof in a neighborhood. This is a possibility any time it is raining or windy. Since our treatment withstands inclement weather the fall is still a good time to have your roof cleaned.

A standard roof cleaning typically lasts for about two years. Here at Safe Roof Cleaning LLC we recognize that a roof cleaning is an investment in the value of your home which is why we offer a five year warranty on any job which includes our preventative treatment.

Why wait until Spring? Give us a call at 860-810-0019 to schedule your roof cleaning today and you’ll have one less thing to worry about when the snow flies this winter.

Safe Roof Cleaning at Wishes on Wheels

Wishes on Wheels

On Sunday, September 15, Make-A-Wish Connecticut held its 14th Annual “Wishes on Wheels” showcase and Safe Roof Cleaning was a proud participant this year.

“Wishes on Wheels” is an annual truck convoy which begins and ends at Rentschler Field and winds through Routes 84, 384 and the surrounding community. This year one of Safe Roof Cleaning’s trucks was near the front of the 590 truck convoy.

The “finish line” at Rentschler Field includes activities, games, prizes and a fun carnival atmosphere for children and their families. This year “Wishes on Wheels” participants and guests raised more than $80,000 in support of Make-A-Wish Connecticut.

“We had a great time at the event,” Safe Roof Cleaning Owner Josh Scavetta said. “It was great to see everyone working together for an excellent cause. An average wish can cost $3,500 so it was great to see that this one event is going to bring wishes to over 20 children.”

Why You Can’t Clean Your Roof Yourself

This is one of the most common questions we hear when prospective clients call our office. Roof cleaning is still a relatively new industry so many folks have questions about how we clean roofs, what’s involved in cleaning a roof and why they can’t just clean their own roofs.

1.       Can’t I just use a pressure washer to clean my roof?

Don’t ever use a pressure washer to clean your roof! A pressure washer does just that—it puts pressure on the shingles of your roof; pressure those shingles are not designed to absorb. Our technicians never use pressure washers when they clean your roof. Our rinsing pumps are specifically designed to rinse at a low pressure but higher volume to remove all dead moss and lichen. We let the water do the cleaning not the pressure.

2.       Don’t I just spray my whole roof?

Our technicians are trained to recognize algae, lichen, moss and other unwanted growth on your roof. When they clean your roof, they treat both the surface and the roots beneath. An untrained person may not recognize or treats the roots beneath, leaving an unfinished job.

3.       What sort of cleaning agent should I buy to clean my roof?

While it is true that several cleaning agents are available to consumers, very few offer the same killing power our own agent provides. Our 100% biodegradable cleaning agent is exclusive to roofing companies—it is not available to the consumer market.

4.       Do I need to worry about what the cleaning agent I buy will do to nearby trees and flowers?

Yes. Many chemical agents can damage trees, flowers and shrubbery near your roof. Our expert technicians take care to spray only at treatment sites and never near trees, flowers or shrubbery on your property.

Please consider calling us to schedule a free estimate and consultation with one of our roof cleaning experts. Roof cleaning can be a dangerous and difficult task—please, leave it to the experts.

How Cleaning Your Roof Can Save You Money

A roof cleaning offers many different benefits to a home owner besides the immediate aesthetic improvement. Actually, we like our customers to understand that it’s not just cosmetic, REAL DAMAGE is occurring underneath those nasty stains. One of the biggest benefits is the potential energy savings a homeowner may enjoy following roof service. Let’s review how we clean roofs and how we pass energy savings on to you.

At Safe Roof, our expert technicians remove algae, lichen and moss during a roof cleaning. They use a special 100% biodegradable solution which removes the foreign substances without damaging the roof shingles underneath. Our technicians never use a pressure washer on your roof since doing so would irreparably damage the shingles on your roof.

Before your roof cleaning you’ll notice that the algae, lichen and moss appear as dark streaks across your roof. A home with a darker roof retains more heat which in turn means your air conditioning works harder to cool your home than it would with a clean roof. A clean roof is lighter and “more breathable,” which means that more heat escapes through your roof and cools your home naturally. A cooler home means that you use less air conditioning in the spring and summertime which leads to a lower monthly energy bill and energy savings during the summer months.

How Long Will my Roof Cleaning Last?

As we’ve discussed previously on this new blog, a roof cleaning is an investment. A clean roof can increase the value of your home and save you money on your energy bills. Today we’re going to delve further into the answer for one of the most common questions we receive—how long will my roof cleaning last?

A standard roof cleaning typically lasts two to three years. This is, however, dependent on a number of variables: the amount of sunlight a roof receives, the pitch and color of your roof, and even your home’s proximity to your neighbors’ roofs. Algae are airborne and travel through the air in the form of spores, which land on the roof of your home and/or garage and take root.

At Safe Roof we proudly offer a Five Year Guarantee on any job which includes our preventative treatment. We guarantee that our treatment prevents future algae, lichen and moss from returning to your roof for a period of five years and we proudly stand behind our work.

For more information or to schedule a roof cleaning estimate, please call our office at 860-810-0019. I look forward to speaking with you!

Top 5 Most Common Questions about Roof Cleaning

Roof cleaning is a relatively new industry, especially here in Connecticut and the rest of Southern New England, so my team and I hear many of the same questions again and again. Here, then, are answers to five of the most common questions we hear on a weekly basis.

1. Why do I need my roof cleaned?

Roof cleaning improves the quality of your home and can even save you money on your energy bill. When algae, lichen and moss cover a roof they damage the roof, which, if left untreated, can eventually result in the need to have a new roof installed. Cleaning a roof is an investment and a cost saving measure because cleaning a roof vs. replacing a roof represents a significant cost savings.

Cleaning a roof can also save you money on your energy bill. Everyone knows darker surfaces tend to absorb more heat than lighter ones. When your shingles absorb more heat in the summer your air conditioning has to work much harder to maintain the same temperature. Some houses were so bad; after they got a roof cleaning they would save up to 40% on their electrical bill. Houses which have had algae removed will have noticeable savings in the summer months.

2. If roof cleaning is so important, why can’t I just clean my roof myself? Why do I need someone to do it for me?

Our expert technicians have been cleaning roofs throughout Connecticut since 2009. The process of cleaning a roof isn’t as simple as spraying a solution on your roof and letting it dry. We start by spraying a 100% biodegradable solution to the roof killing all the algae organisms growing on the roof. We then follow that up with a low pressure rinse cleaning off all the dead growth leaving you with a spotless roof. We also offer an added roof preventive application, which we apply once the roof has been cleaned, which halts the rapid re-growth of the algae.

3. Do you use a power washer?

Our technicians do not use a power washer at any time. In fact, we never recommend using a power washer on any roof structure.  Our technicians use specially designed pumps that clean off the dead algae. These pumps run at low psi and higher volume; letting the water do the cleaning not the pressure.

4. What are those black streaks on my roof?

Those black streaks are algae called Gloeocapsa magma. This algae is nitrogen fixed and needs no nutrition to grow. The black streaks are the signs of the algae reproducing and leaving millions of dead cells to build up and cause the streak.

5. What happens if it is raining the day the work is scheduled?

A judgment call will generally be made by the owner and a courtesy call made to you by the office staff the morning of if the weather is going to not allow us to clean your roof. We are able to clean your roof in a light rain. We can even apply the roof preventative application in a mild drizzle.
